Dr. Hector Ocaranza MD, City of El Paso Department of Public Health

​

Dr. Ocaranza has been with the city of El Paso for 12 years, and has been the city and county’s Health Authority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Ocaranza completed his undergraduate education at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez in 1993 and went to medical school at Texas Tech University in 1999, where he specialized in pediatrics. Dr. Ocaranza also received his master’s in public health from the UT Houston School of Public Health in 2014. Dr. Ocaranza has been an ally and invaluable resource for athletic trainers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Sergio Alvarado MD, Desert Institute of Sports Medicine

Sergio Alvarado, MD is a Sports and Family Medicine physician born and raised in El Paso, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Science from Our Lady of The Lake University in San Antonio, Texas and obtained his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico.  In 2011, he completed his residency in Family Medicine at Texas Tech Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. Dr. Alvarado acquired his fellowship training in Sports Medicine at John Peter Smith Health Network in Arlington, Texas. He also served on the medical staff for the TCU athletics program. Dr. Alvarado is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. Dr. Alvarado is fluent in both English and Spanish.

In addition to caring for family medicine patients, Dr. Alvarado helps patients manage their pain caused by overuse injuries from work or sports with joint injections. He provides patients with pain relief so they can return to their jobs or the sport they love as pain free as possible. In addition, Dr. Alvarado is currently the team doctor for the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Concussion Board and is the team doctor for over three school districts. He has also volunteered as ring-side physician for Golden Gloves and Clash of the Titans.

Furthermore, Dr. Alvarado has been treating patients with high-risk osteoporosis in the El Paso community for over eight years. He has helped hundreds of patients avoid fractures and maintain a healthy independent lifestyle.

The Mission of the Sun City Athletic Trainers’ Association is to promote Athletic Training within the Community of El Paso, Texas and the surrounding cities, including Southern New Mexico by providing continuing education hours and training to Athletic Trainers and Student Athletic Trainers. In order to provide the best quality of Services to our patients. In addition, to maintain an atmosphere for the free Exchange of ideas and methods for the optimal practice of Athletic Training.
